With MINI’s announcement of their first electric car a couple of months ago we have been patiently waiting to see what kind of pricing it would have. Thankfully the American MINI Cooper SE price has been announced finally, and it’s pretty decent.
MINI has announced that the US MSRP of the MINI Cooper SE would be $29,900 plus an additional $850 Destination & Handling fee. The new electric car will make its way to US showrooms in early March 2020.
If you remember my initial impressions of the SE, you know that I was not too impressed by the rather lackluster range and little signs of progression in BMW’s electric development over the years. While those feelings still ring true with me, it does help that this MINI will now be one of the new cheapest electric cars that you can buy (although it only beats out the Nissan LEAF by $90).
MINI does highlight that if you take advantage of the multitude of incentives, you can have the SE for less than $20,000, which is no doubt a great deal.
While the MINI Cooper SE has an MSRP of $29,900, federal tax credits and state electric vehicle tax credits make the MINI Cooper SE even more attractive. In some cases, qualified consumers can get a MINI Cooper SE for as low as $17,900, along with additional incentives such as HOV lane access in some states.
There will be three different trim levels available for the SE with the base model including the following features:
- Navigation system with 6.5” display
- Apple CarPlay Compatibility
- Heated Front Seats
- Comfort Access Keyless entry
- LED Headlights and Fog lights
- Active Driving Assistant with Forward Collision Warning
- Acoustic Pedestrian Warning
- Rear View Camera
- Bluetooth with phone and audio streaming
- Auto Rain Sensing Wipers and Headlights
- Automatic Climate Control
- Heated Mirrors and Washer Jets
- Cruise Control
- Leather Multifunction Steering Wheel
- Dynamic Digital Instrument Cluster
- Energy Efficient Heat Pump
- AC Charging up to 7.4 kW
- DC Fast Charging up to 50kW
- Carbon Black Leatherette Upholstery
- 16″ Wheels
- Storage Package
Michael Peyton, Vice President, MINI of the Americas had the following comment:
“U.S. pricing of the new MINI Cooper SE was set to establish this new battery electric as a true class leader in making premium electric mobility more accessible to a broader range of customers. We at MINI are pleased to offer more people the ability to experience a drive charged with passion in the form of the MINI Cooper SE, an EV that is built “for the drive”.”
For those needing a refresher, the MINI Cooper SE has the following specs:
- 32.6 kWh battery
- WLTP Range of 200-224km (124-144 miles)
- 0-60 mph: 6.9 seconds
- Top Speed: 93 mph
- 181hp and 199 lb.-ft. of torque
- 50 kW Charging (0-80% charge in about 35 minutes)
Overall I still believe that the low range severely limits it to being strictly a city car. But if you can get it in the low $20,000 range, then it’s not a bad deal.
