Looks like the Ford Mustang Mach-E won’t be the only electric Mustang we’ll see, although this one will be exceptionally rarer. Ford has created a one-off 1400 hp electric drag strip monster with its newest Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 which pays homage to the original Cobra Jet from the late 60s.
This is the second time that we’ve seen an American automaker make a drag-oriented version of the muscle car, but with an electric engine. The first was when Chevrolet created the eCOPO Camero Concept over a year ago. However, while that car only had about 700 hp and a quarter-mile time of about nine seconds, the Cobra Jet 1400 has over double the horsepower and is targeting a sub-eight second quarter-mile time. This is already far beyond the scope of regular production cars as the Dodge Demon, which has the fastest quarter-mile time of any production car, has a time of about 9.65 seconds.
Ford did not reveal the battery size or how many electric motors are housed in the Cobra Jet 1400. Given its limited use in only a drag strip setting, the battery doesn’t really need to be super big as it will only launch in quarter-mile spurts.
Dave Pericak, Global Director, Ford Icons commented:
“Ford has always used motorsport to demonstrate innovation. Electric powertrains give us a completely new kind of performance and the all-electric Cobra Jet 1400 is one example of pushing new technology to the absolute limit. We’re excited to showcase what’s possible in an exciting year when we also have the all-electric Mustang Mach-E joining the Mustang family.”
We will not actually get to see the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 in action until later this year at a drag racing event, as Ford is still working on tweaking the car. However, if you really want to catch a peek of the electric dragster, it will be featured this Sunday, April 26 by watching MotorTrend On Demand’s “Hard Cell”.
With there now being a Mustang and Camero electric dragster, it is only a matter of time before we get to see all-electric drag races take place. Which honestly would be a pretty surreal experience given how loud regular drag races are.
What do you guys think of the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400? When will we see an all-electric drag race take place? Let us know down in the comments below.
