Earlier this week, the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG announced that the German automaker will be manufacturing an electric Macan as their next generation vehicle and first battery-electric SUV.
Following the initial unveiling of the Taycan, the first purely electric sports car from Porsche, the German automaker has decided to expand their range in the field of electromobility with the announcement of an all-new fully-electric version of their best selling SUV to date. According to resent reports, Porsche has begun investing at their Leipzig factory in order to prepare for the production of the electric Macan. Since the groundbreaking ceremony in February 2000, Porsche has invested an estimated €1.3 billion (approximately $1.47 billion) in development in Leipzig. The German automaker claims that by making an investment in electromobility at the Leipzig site, they will create the opportunity to produce fully electric vehicles on the existing production line in the future.
Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche AG, commented on the recent announcement, stating:
“Electromobility and Porsche go together perfectly; not just because they share a high-efficiency approach, but especially because of their sporty character. By 2022 we will be investing more than six billion euros in electric mobility, and by 2025 50% of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system. Nevertheless, over the next ten years we will focus on a drive mix consisting of even further optimised petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models, and purely electrically operated sports cars. Our aim is to take a pioneering role in technology, and for this reason we will continue to consistently align the company with the mobility of the future.”
The upcoming electric Macan will be based on the same Porsche PPE (Premium Platform Electric) architecture that will be featured in the Taycan. Porsche claims that they will unveil the purely electric Macan at the end of 2019, with plans to begin production “at the start of the next decade.”
