More and more cities are getting involved in the electric bus revolution as American automotive and energy storage company Proterra recently announced their plan to supply electric buses to cities in Hawaii and New York.
Proterra, a leading innovator in electric transportation, announced that Hawaiian tour operator JTB Hawaii and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have agreed to acquire several electric buses from them. JTB Hawaii will reportedly be replacing four of their own diesel-powered buses with three Proterra Catalyst E2 electric buses, while the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will be delivered eighteen Catalyst E2s for shuttle service at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), and LaGuardia Airport (LGA).
Proterra CEO Ryan Popple commented on the recent announcement, stating:
“Hawaii has set an example for other states by committing to ambitious clean energy goals, and we’re honored to be selected as the first battery-electric bus provider for JTB Hawaii. We look forward to working with JTB Hawaii to provide its passengers with clean, quiet, transportation and contribute to the continued preservation Hawaii’s natural beauty.”
During the electric buses’ 12 year lifespan, over 8 million pounds of carbon emissions will be eliminated in Hawaii alone.
In regards to the delivery of Proterra electric buses in New York, Popple added:
“This deployment represents one of the largest commitments to zero-emission vehicles of any airport authority in the U.S., and we applaud the Port Authority’s goal of converting their entire bus fleet to electric vehicle technology. We’re proud to help New York and New Jersey introduce electric bus technology throughout the Port Authority airport system. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports are a gateway to our country. The Port Authority’s acquisition of eighteen Proterra buses represents one of the largest electric bus fleet commitments of any airport authority in the United States to date, with reports estimating that the company will be avoiding approximately 49.5 million pounds of CO2 emissions over the course of the buses’ lifespan.
A majority of the electric buses order are expected to be delivered in early 2019, with six already in operation at JFK Airport.
