The Tesla Cybertruck Is Ugly, but That Doesn’t Matter

by Denis Gurskiy

It has now been a few months since the official unveiling of the Tesla Cybertruck and mass questioning by onlookers as to what exactly they are looking at when they see the Cybertruck’s design. Time has passed and while the design has probably grown on many people, it’s still pretty ugly, but that doesn’t matter.

Let me just start off by saying that while saying that is ugly might be harsh, it is still a design that we like enough and considered it a plus when deciding on pre-ordering the Cybertruck.

The response to our above showed that many people shared the same sentiment, and while the Tesla Cybertruck doesn’t have the same conventional beauty as something like a Ferrari 250 GTO or Toyota 2000GT, it’s design is interesting enough that attracts people. Whether it be because the design breaks away from the mold or people are simply fans of the cyberpunk design language, the ugly design has won the hearts of many people.

While Elon Musk stated that he was personally invested in the project and warned people that the design would be ‘out there’, people will continue to wonder if the choice to go with this radical design was the best route to go if Tesla intends to make the Cybertruck a best seller.

Offering my personal opinion on the matter, I feel like Tesla has won over more non-truck people (such as myself) with this interesting design, then they would have won truck people will a more conventional design. While there looks to be a very nice crop of electric trucks coming soon, I remain doubtful that many die-hard truck guys will be fumbling over themselves to buy an electric truck anytime soon. A lot of utilitarian purposes for trucks are filled in sparsely populated areas where charging infrastructure has yet to have really been developed.

On the flip side, I and many others who were not too keen on trucks have now started considering or have intended to go ahead and getting the Cybertruck, partly due to its cool design.

The total reservations for the Cybertruck are now said to be over 650,000 which would put it over the initial reservations for the Model 3. Overall it is looking like the Cybertruck might Tesla’s number one seller, at least in North America.

I do not think that Tesla will use this type of design for any of their other cars in the future however, even if the Cybertruck proves to be hugely successful. While I like the design, this type of sharp industrial look only works well with utilitarian types of vehicle segments such as pickups and SUVs. I doubt many will want sharp angles and exposed stainless steel on their family sedan or minivan.

Now we have to wait if the novelty of it wears off in a few years and we’ll look back on design akin to the Pontiac Aztek or perhaps the popularity of the Cybertruck will start a little cyberpunk design theme for other automakers moving forward.

What do you guys think? How do you feel about the Cybertruck design? Would it have been better as a traditional-looking truck? Let us know down in the comments below.
