Nissan LEAF Sales Explode in Europe and Japan

by David Mowatt

Since the second-generation Nissan LEAF’s unveiling in September 2017, it has become the fastest selling electric vehicle in Europe, and has recently been noted as the #31 best-selling model for the month of August in Japan.

After its initial release, Nissan sold roughly 43,000 LEAFs in Europe in just the first eight months of 2018.

In a statement addressing the success of the Nissan LEAF in Europe, Nissan had this to say:

“Designed to make a sustainable lifestyle attainable, the Nissan LEAF has captured the head and heart of Europe’s motorists, with nearly 70% of LEAF owners changing from internal combustion engines to electric mobility for the first time. Across Europe, 43,000 LEAFs were sold in the first eight months of 2018, making it the best-selling EV across the continent.”

Gareth Dunsmore, the Electric Vehicle Director of Nissan Europe, also had the following to add:

“The new LEAF is an important step towards Nissan’s vision for an intelligent, fully integrated electric vehicle experience.

“The fact the LEAF has resonated so strongly with both motorists and critics against a backdrop of increasing EV adoption and an ever-growing list of competitors shows just how talented it is. Looking ahead, we’re confident that LEAF’s reputation as a leader in the EV market will continue to grow.”

The Nissan LEAF has not only experienced success in Europe; it has been doing just as well over in Japan, too.

In the first eight months of 2018, Nissan sold 18,691 LEAFs in Japan. Having been noted as selling 2,065 units in the month of August alone, the Nissan LEAF managed to grab the #31 best-selling spot among all other vehicles in Japan, with the annual growth of sales projected to be roughly 230%.

With the incredible success of the LEAF in both Europe and Japan, we suspect the Japanese automaker is rather pleased with the wealth of positive reception they’ve been receiving, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for their compact electric vehicle.
