The BMW i3 was BMWs first mass-produced zero emissions vehicle, starting production in 2013. The model started out with a 22 kWh battery that was good for a range of 81 miles. and could be purchased with an additional range extending engine that increased the range by 78 miles. The car received an update in 2017, that increased the battery to 33 kWh (but only 27.2 kWh of which are usable) and a range of 114 miles, the optional range extending engine gives an additional 83 miles of range. The car’s range and performance probably doesn’t live up to today’s standards in terms of range and speed. But back in 2014, it was a solid (and one of the few real options anyways). The car definitely has a quirky, “love or hate it” type of styling. It is a good first entry for BMW, but we’ll see where we go from here.

In 2018 BMW released a more sporty variant of the i3, known as the i3s.  The car received a sportier suspension settings, wider tires, more aggressive bodywork, and a more powerful motor that puts out 137 kilowatts (184 horsepower) and 199 pound-feet of torque versus 127 kw (170 hp) and 184 lb-ft in the standard i3. The 14hp bump in power certainly wasn’t going to make this car win any awards, but the more aggressive styling does help with the look of the original, but still not enough to win any design awards.

For the 2019 model year, BMW had once again upgraded the batteries in both the i3 and i3s to the same 42.2 kWh battery pack. The new battery pack had given the new models a range of at the very least, 260km (160 miles) depending on the testing cycle. This represents a significant jump in range from the previous model. Along with that minor changes such as adaptive LED headlights and new interior/exterior colors were offered for this model year. Other than those changes, the cars were exactly the same.
